East Africa serves as the conservation stronghold for Common Hippos in Africa. Spending hours in the water, these large animals move very fast on land. The other hippo species native to Africa is the Pygmy Hippo. It is smaller and found exclusively in West Africa.

The African Wildlife Foundation lists the Common Hippo's conservation status as Vulnerable. The IUCN Red List shows the Pygmy Hippo's conservation status as Endangered.
