Becoming Ocean

Fox Glacier, South Island, New Zealand

Water running from Fox Glacier, across the glacier moraine, to the sea.

This image was created in 2010 in the valley on New Zealand's south island leading to the face of Fox Glacier. Glacial runoff poured over the grey moraine running out to the sea as we walked up to the glacier that we could see towering above us at the end of the trail. Now, in 2017, if you stand in the same location where I created this image, according to reports I have read and images I have seen, you would not be able to see the glacier at all. It has retreated significantly over the past seven years, all of that water becoming ocean.

The bright blue colors of this still puddle of glacier water, to me speak of hope in the midst of the melt and inspire me to find a moment of joy that still to this day encourages me to continue on doing good things. Photo © copyright by Loren Logan Lones.
